The Lakers and Carmelo Anthony? Wouldn't count on it.

An ESPN report that the Lakers were in preliminary talks with Denver for the Nuggets' unhappy all-star forward was quickly rebuffed by the Lakers.

"What's out there is inaccurate," said a Lakers representative familiar with the negotiations.

The report said the deal would revolve around Andrew Bynum for Anthony, though a team source told The Times on Tuesday that the Lakers were unwilling to deal Bynum, the 23-year-old center who has been plagued by knee problems.

Bynum is considered the personal project of Lakers executive Jim Buss, the son of team owner Jerry Buss.

If Denver had Bynum

the Nuggets will become instant contender. Imagine a Denver team with excellent 3-pt shooters and inside dominance of Nene and Bynum. Lakers will lose to the Nuggets for sure. Neither Odom or Gasol can stop Nene or Bynum. Then there're KMart and the Birdman...

Trading away your inside presence is a sure way to lose the series to Spurs and Celtics. Lakers won back-to-back with Andrew barely walking; but his inside presence altered the Celtics’ shots and kept their bigs at bay. With Bynum inside, Gasol actually played better. Without Bynum Gasol could only operate outside of the 12 to 15-feet hemisphere that Garnet, Perkins, Davis, and Shaq told him so. The best thing in Carmelo’s game is his scoring and that the Lakers could easily do so with Bryant and efficient ball-passing. Carmelo has no defense AT ALL. And guess what wins the championship: DEFENSE.

Bynum for Anthony

Jim Buss needs to realize that the Bynum project has failed and the reality is that it's over. How long will Gasol and Odom need to pick-up after a 23 year old center plagued with knee problems. The Lakers need to improve the outside shooting and Ron Ron is not the answer. Jim Buss will need to address the 16 million plus option the Bynum will have next year.
